Schneider Contactor Spec Checklist: 7 Things I Check Before Ordering (and the $11,700 Reason Why)

I'm a controls specialist. I've been handling contactor and motor starter orders for nine years—first as a panel builder, now as the person who reviews every Schneider contactor order before it goes to a distributor. I've personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $11,700 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist.

People assume a contactor is just a contactor. The reality is that the wrong contactor usually isn't discovered until something heats up, chatters, or welds closed. As of early 2025, I'm still seeing the same expensive mistakes on site calls. If you're ordering a Schneider contactor, use this checklist. It's not complicated, but it keeps me out of trouble.

1. Define the load and utilization category

Before you look at amps, define the load. Are you switching a resistive heater, a lighting circuit, or a three-phase motor? If it's a motor, are you doing normal starting and stopping (AC-3) or do you need inching and jogging (AC-4)? That changes the ampere rating you should be looking at.

The rating on the front of a Schneider contactor is not universal. A TeSys D LC1D09, for example, is rated 9 A in AC-3, but its AC-1 rating is higher. If you pick the contactor by the motor's FLA and ignore the utilization category, the contactor might work on the bench and fail in production.

IEC 60947-4-1 defines these categories. I keep a copy of the relevant Schneider catalogue page next to my computer. It has stopped more mistakes than any other reference.

2. Choose the coil voltage before you choose the frame

This is where I lost my first $1,200. In 2017, I ordered LC1D18 contactors with 230V AC coils for a panel that had a 24V DC control system. They worked for about five minutes, chattered, and then one let out the magic smoke. The classic rookie mistake: I checked the ampere frame and skipped the coil code.

If you need a 24V DC contactor Schneider option, look at the coil code—or rather, the complete part number—in the TeSys D range. In most catalogues, B7 means 24V DC. For example, LC1D09B7 is the 9A frame with a 24V DC coil. If you're replacing an existing unit, get the full part number from the nameplate—not just the model family. I still kick myself for the times I ordered by frame size and ignored the suffix.

Also check the quality of the 24V DC supply. Per IEC 60947-4-1, a contactor has to pick up reliably at 85% of its rated coil voltage. A dirty rectified supply can make that impossible. If your panel feeds DC coils from a simple rectifier, add capacitance or use a proper DC power supply.

3. Count the auxiliary contacts you need

The second most common issue I see is a contactor that works, but the PLC never sees the feedback. The reason is usually missing auxiliary contacts.

The LC1D range accepts side-mounted and top-mounted auxiliary contact blocks. If you need a status feedback signal, an interlock for another contactor, or a mechanically linked contact for a safety circuit, add the blocks before you place the order. Adding them later takes longer and costs more.

I still kick myself for a $3,200-order mistake in 2022: I bought 12 contactors without auxiliary blocks because I thought we could add them later. We could, but the panel builder had to re-wire every motor starter. The labor cost more than the blocks. Now I count the auxiliary needs on the schematic before I order.

4. Ask: what is a definite purpose contactor, and is it right for this job?

Every few weeks, someone asks what is a definite purpose contactor and whether it can replace a TeSys D. A definite purpose contactor is tuned for a specific application—HVAC compressor, fan, lighting, or similar. It's compact and cost-effective for that job. Schneider's Square D 8910DP line is an example of the type.

The catch: definite purpose contactors are not meant to be a general-purpose substitute for every industrial application. Their ratings, terminal spacing, and expected life match the target equipment. If you're building an industrial control panel for motor control, a general-purpose IEC contactor is usually the safer choice. In North America, look for a UL 60947-4-1 listing rather than assuming a definite purpose part is approved for a different application.

And don't use standard contactors to build a 50 amp RV transfer switch. A transfer switch needs proper source interlocking, neutral handling, and a switching sequence that simple contactors don't provide. I've seen the aftermath of someone who thought a contactor is just a switch. The contactor didn't fail—the design was wrong.

5. Check terminal capacity and torque specs

A loose terminal on a contactor creates heat, and heat derates the contactor. This sounds obvious, but more callbacks come from bad terminations than from failed contactors.

Before terminating, check the wiring diagram on the contactor or in the Schneider catalogue PDF. Conductor size, type, and torque setting all matter. If you don't have the torque value, don't guess. Look it up.

One subtle detail: ambient temperature changes the rating. If your contactor is in an enclosure with a VFD for a 3 phase motor, the heat inside can be significant. The catalogue may show a lower permissible current at 55°C or 60°C. If you ignore that, the contactor will pass the bench test and fail in the summer.

6. Think about how the contactor connects to a VFD for 3 phase motor

Here is the counterintuitive step that most people miss.

If you are using a VFD for 3 phase motor speed control, do not automatically add a contactor between the VFD output and the motor. Opening that output contactor while the drive is running can damage the drive's output stage. Some drive manuals allow an output contactor only when the drive is inhibited before switching. Check the manual.

What you normally want is a disconnect or contactor ahead of the VFD for safety isolation. But don't use that input contactor to start and stop the drive repeatedly. The VFD is supposed to control the motor; the contactor is there for isolation. Use the right part for the right job.

7. Filter Schneider Electric contactor reviews with these two questions

I know you're reading Schneider Electric contactor reviews before buying. Good. But a lot of those reviews are written by people who had a bad afternoon, not necessarily a bad product.

When you see coil burned out, ask: was the coil voltage correct? Was the control supply clean 24V DC? Was the contactor used within its utilization category? The same applies to contacts welded. A contactor that welds after a short circuit may have been protecting the circuit. That's not automatically a design flaw.

This is also where my value-over-price rule kicks in. I'm not buying the cheapest part. I'm buying the correct part first. In my experience managing more than 200 contactor orders, the lowest quote has cost us more in about 60% of cases when you count downtime, rush shipping, and an electrician waiting at the site. That $200 savings turned into a $1,500 problem in one of my early jobs. The contactor wasn't bad. My selection was bad.

That's the checklist. It's not glamorous, but it's the difference between a one-day install and a three-day emergency. One more thing: download the catalogue PDF or wiring diagram for the exact part number before you place the order. I do that first now. After the third rejection in Q1 2024, I made it a rule.
